Convert CSV to JSON

Paste CSV or drop in a file and get tidy JSON straight away. Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe separators are spotted automatically, and your data never leaves the browser.

Converted on your device. Your data never leaves your browser.

Turning CSV into JSON

  1. 1

Paste the CSV into the input box, drop a .csv file onto it, or press Open file.

  2. 2

Check the options: the separator is detected for you, the first row becomes the JSON keys, and numbers and booleans get proper types.

  3. 3

Copy the JSON, or press Download .json to save it.

What makes this CSV to JSON converter handy

Copes with messy CSV

Quoted fields, escaped quotes, commas and line breaks inside cells, and Excel's byte-order mark are all read correctly.

Sensible types

Numbers, true/false and blank cells become real JSON values, while IDs and ZIP codes with leading zeros stay as text.

Any separator

Commas, semicolons (common in European Excel exports), tabs and pipes are all detected automatically.

Private and instant

Conversion happens in your browser as you type – your data is never uploaded.

Switch between CSV, JSON and YAML, or turn images into Base64, without installing anything. Everything is processed in your browser, so exports, customer data and API keys stay on your machine rather than going to someone else's server.

Questions & answers

How can I get an Excel sheet into JSON?

In Excel or Google Sheets choose File → Save As (or Download) → CSV, then drop that CSV in above and download the JSON.

What is "First row is header" for?

With it on, the first row provides the keys and each remaining row becomes an object such as {"name": "Ada"}. Switch it off to get an array of arrays instead.

Why are some numbers left as text?

Values with leading zeros, like ZIP codes or an ID of 007, and integers too big for JSON numbers stay as strings so nothing gets lost. Turn off "Detect numbers & booleans" to keep everything as text.

Does it work with big CSV files?

Yes – hundreds of thousands of rows convert in a second or two. With very large files the on-screen preview is trimmed, but the download always has the complete JSON.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

Never. The work is done by JavaScript running in your own browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server or kept anywhere, which makes it safe for personal photos and sensitive data – and it carries on working even on a patchy connection.
