What exactly is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the standard iPhone and iPad photo format since iOS 11. Files are smaller than JPGs, but lots of Windows programs, websites and older devices can't open them.

Do photos lose quality when converted to JPG?

At 90% quality or more you won't notice a difference. For a lossless copy, use the HEIC to PNG converter instead – the files will just be larger.

Can I make my iPhone stop saving HEIC?

Yes. In Settings → Camera → Formats, choose Most Compatible and new photos are saved as JPG. To keep HEIC on the phone but send JPGs, set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic.
