What happens to your image going from HEIC to JPG
- JPG is a lossy format. The Quality slider begins at 90%, which is indistinguishable from the original for almost any photo; slide it down for a smaller file and the preview shows the new size before you save.
- Your photos keep their full resolution, and the JPG opens on Windows, Android and any website.
HEIC vs JPG in brief
- HEIC is the photo format Apple uses by default on iPhone and iPad. It packs a picture into about half the space a JPG would need, yet plenty of Windows computers, web forms, websites and older apps refuse to open it.
- JPG (or JPEG) is the photo format that works almost everywhere. Lossy compression keeps files small, but there's no transparency and each re-save throws away a little more detail.
Worth knowing
- You can add as many files as you like. Bigger batches simply take a bit longer, since your own device is doing the work.
- Files with the same name get a number added (photo.jpg, photo-2.jpg), so nothing in the ZIP gets overwritten.
HEIC vs JPG
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC), highly efficient | Lossy, with adjustable quality |
| Transparency | Possible, though camera shots don't use it | No – see-through areas turn into a solid colour |
| Animation | Can hold several frames (Live Photos, bursts) | No |
| Ideal for | Keeping iPhone and iPad storage free | Photos to share, email or upload |
| Works on | Apple devices; hit and miss on Windows, Android and websites | Everywhere |
Questions & answers
Does changing HEIC to JPG lower the quality?
At the 90% default you won't be able to tell. JPG is lossy, so very low settings can bring blur or blocky edges.
Can I do a whole batch of HEIC files?
Yes. Add as many as you want; each is converted separately, and Download all bundles them into a single ZIP.
Do my photos get sent anywhere?
No. Your browser does the conversion with your device's own processor, so your photos stay with you. Once the page has loaded you could even switch off your internet connection.
