What happens to your image going from SVG to JPG

  • JPG can't store transparency, so see-through parts of the SVG are filled in white instead of going black.
  • JPG is a lossy format. The Quality slider begins at 90%, which is indistinguishable from the original for almost any photo; slide it down for a smaller file and the preview shows the new size before you save.
  • The SVG is rendered at its own width and height. For a bigger, crisper JPG, the SVG to PNG tool lets you choose 2×, 4× or 8× scale.

SVG vs JPG in brief

  • SVG is a vector format that describes shapes and text as code, so it stays crisp at any size. Lots of apps, social platforms, office documents and email programs can't show SVG and need an ordinary image instead.
  • JPG (or JPEG) is the photo format that works almost everywhere. Lossy compression keeps files small, but there's no transparency and each re-save throws away a little more detail.

Chromebook tips

  • Managed school and work Chromebooks often block apps and extensions. This tool needs neither – it's just a normal Chrome tab.
  • After the page has loaded, the conversion works even without an internet connection.

Questions & answers

Does changing SVG to JPG lower the quality?

At the 90% default you won't be able to tell. JPG is lossy, so very low settings can bring blur or blocky edges.

Can I do a whole batch of SVG files?

Yes. Add as many as you want; each is converted separately, and Download all bundles them into a single ZIP.

Do my photos get sent anywhere?

No. Your browser does the conversion with your device's own processor, so your photos stay with you. Once the page has loaded you could even switch off your internet connection.

Where do I find the converted file on my Chromebook?

Click Download. The file is saved in My files › Downloads.
