What happens to your image going from BMP to JPG

  • JPG is a lossy format. The Quality slider begins at 90%, which is indistinguishable from the original for almost any photo; slide it down for a smaller file and the preview shows the new size before you save.
  • Because BMP is uncompressed, the JPG usually ends up a small fraction of the size.

BMP vs JPG in brief

  • BMP is an old, uncompressed Windows bitmap format. The files are huge for the number of pixels they hold, and most websites, phones and messaging apps won't accept them.
  • JPG (or JPEG) is the photo format that works almost everywhere. Lossy compression keeps files small, but there's no transparency and each re-save throws away a little more detail.

Worth knowing

  • You can add as many files as you like. Bigger batches simply take a bit longer, since your own device is doing the work.
  • Files with the same name get a number added (photo.jpg, photo-2.jpg), so nothing in the ZIP gets overwritten.

Questions & answers

Does changing BMP to JPG lower the quality?

At the 90% default you won't be able to tell. JPG is lossy, so very low settings can bring blur or blocky edges.

Can I do a whole batch of BMP files?

Yes. Add as many as you want; each is converted separately, and Download all bundles them into a single ZIP.

Do my photos get sent anywhere?

No. Your browser does the conversion with your device's own processor, so your photos stay with you. Once the page has loaded you could even switch off your internet connection.
